Language Barrier

Unlike the majority of foreigners in Korea, one of the things I like most about living here (any I’m guessing any country that speaks a language foreign to mine) is the ability to NOT understand strangers’ conversations.  In this case “ignorance is bliss” comes to mind.  The moment I start having the ability to fully understand random conversations here will be the moment I truly start hating these people.

Sure, you might say “But Dan, for this to happen it will mean you’ve almost mastered the Korean language!”  Of course, that would be great and something I’d love to accomplish one day but I also love being on public transportation and in public places and not having the capability to overhear what people are talking about.

Once you hear a stranger discussing something (that you CAN understand), you immediately judge them, for better or for worse.  You might also say “Dan, you are a guest in Korea.  You shouldn’t say bad things about them.”  Well if anything this whole thought is talking shit about English speaking people, since it’s from these speakers that I’ve obtained such a disdain for the ability to listen and comprehend.

I don’t know, maybe Koreans are all talking about very important and interesting things – but my guess is that they’re just like everyone else in a developed, democratic country: talking about stuff like ‘Jersey Shore,’ taxes, Type-2 diabetes, how their husband is a lazy asshole, how their wife is a stuck up bitch…

NOT overhearing these types of conversations is something people should never take for granted.  I know I wont.

Good day and godspeed.  And god bless the United States of America.

Love the article except for one thing, they most likely aren’t talking about Type II diabetes cause Kimchi cures that. If anything they are talking about another victim of Fan Death.

Well noted! It was in the news in the last month or so that someone died from fan death! I’ll try to find the article on that.
